Hi all,

I'm running XFCE on freshly installed Gentoo system. I have problem with graphical login.

1. If I choose xdm to start automatically with SLiM as login manager, when it comes to SLiM login, the keyboard layout changes automatically. If I type my username as 'saivnoba' it shows up as 'sa5vn6ba'. At this stage if I change to console and try 'root' it shows as 'r t'. Consequently I'm unable to login.

2. If I use plain 'xdm' instead of 'slim' in /etc/conf.d/xdm file, the keyboad layout 'seems' normal but after I hit Enter it comes back to xdm login page itself.

3. With xdm as login manager and unable to login graphically, if I switch to console, I'm able to login normally and startx works fine.

4. If I don't use xdm and boot into console, I don't have any problem with keyboard at all.

How do I fix this problem?

Thanks in advance, SV

Hi, problem with SLiM is solved with disabling 'numlock on' in slim.conf.

I noticed that left hand keys were ok. In fact with right hand keys also, 'y', 'h', 'n' and other keys like brackets, apostrophe were ok. On closer look noticed the keyboard had numpad embedded. The keys m,>,?,j,k,l,;,u,i,o,p,7,8,9,0 were the ones which had problem, which explains 'saivnoba' displaying as 'sa5vn6ba'. These were getting activated with 'numlock on' option in /etc/slim.conf file. Commenting out this line solved the problem. Changing to 'numlock off' may also give the same result, without commenting it out.

However, using 'xdm' still does not allow me to login. Keeps comming back to xdm screen. Although my main problem got solved, I would like to know why xdm is behaving this way. I'll mark thread as solved after a day (or if somebody would explain this to me).

Thanks, SV

P.S.: I had another problem with network manager. Although I was member of 'plugdev' and had rebooted system several times, I was not able to activate/edit wireless networks. I was getting 'Failed to add/activate connection. (32) insufficient privileges.' error. I was about to post a thread for this. But the problem got solved automatically after the problem with SLiM login was solved!? May be because I was starting X manually before with 'startx' and now I'm logging in directly to GUI from a login manager!?
