Hi all,

I have recently come into an issue when I have moved kernel version to 3.7.1.

At the moment when I attempt to emerge packages i.e. coreuilts, findutils, etc; which contain the line 'checking whether getcwd handles long file names properly...' it crashes. The only thing in common when it crashes is it gets stuck on this line in the emerge.

Could someone please let me know what information i should post to assist with troubleshooting this issue.

Thanks,

Please elaborate on the nature of the crash. Is it a kernel panic? If so, what is the stack trace?

Hi Hu,

So from what I can make out the kernel doesn't panic. There is no red asterixand the 'make failed' appears.

What does happen is when it gets to the part about 'checking whether getcwd handles long file names properly...' my ssh server stops responding. I run postfix and courier-imap and this also stops responding. Im not locally at this machiene, so all the work I perform is remote.

The work around is restart the machiene. I have not noticed any other abnormal behavior as of yet.

This is stopping me running an emerge system, which im quite keen to run as I have recently added the 'fortran' flag into gcc, & also changed my profile from the default profile using eselect to the hardend profile. I would like to rebuild my entire system for consistancy.

This appears to happen with any package which requires getcwd to get a long file name.

Any ideas on where to start to look or what info i need to post?

Ok, so i have done some reading and it looks like getcwd is a part of glibc.

I have checked the current use flags, and did some reading and found that I might have made a mistake in the past by having the -vanilla flag in my make.conf file.

I have removed this and will start to redo GCC and see how I go.

Ok, so now im starting to get somewhere.

I removed the -vanilla flag from my make.conf.

Then I re-complied gcc, glibc & glib.

Then I noticed my udev was an older version, so upgraded that and rebooted.

Then I checked every other package within sys-fs and I found that everything I had installed was an older ver so I upgraded all of them.

Now binutils have not stopped getcwd which is sweet.

But the sage continues.....

when I was compling findutils its now gone into an endless loop on..

'checking for getpagesize...'

At least im making progress will continue to update.

:)

So I finally got a screen on the system and I saw the kernel was panicking so i complied 3.7.2 from 3.7.1 and it was still panicking.

The I rolled back to 3.6.6 and redid the toolchain for GCC, and im back running smoothly.

I think I will attempt to migrate 3.7.2 once I have rebuilt the system and the world.

But all in all, issue is resolved.

I'm seeing this as well (on 3.7.0). It's specific to some grsec option in the hardened kernel according to the trace when the kernel panic occurs (though I failed to note down the output, hence the lack of it here). Anyway I think a few grsec bugs were patched in the more recent hardened kernel releases, so I'm going to try the latest (3.7.5 at the time of writing) to see if the problem goes away...

Here's a screenshot of the error (haven't tried 3.7.5 yet):

It seems this still occurs on 3.7.5-hardened
