Hi, i can only connect using mobile usb key, my target is x86 2G 1.6mhz (old acer laptop 32bit), i already have linux arch & archbang & XP on hard disk, and a arch xfce installation on extern HD, do you have some suggest ?
I would try to install to hd extern if possible using arch to download some package that is not available on iso (if necessary)

wich one is better for my purpose?

can i use chroot from arch to gentoo eventually?

thanks you very much

enricotognoni,

Welcome to Gentoo.

You should use one of your existing installs to install Gentoo. If you do that, you will not need /current-iso/ as its just the tools you need to achieve the install.
None of it would end up in your install.

/current-stage3/ is a tarball of most of the base install of Gentoo. You will need that.

Provided your other installs support your mobile usb key, you can download it as the handbook says, if if you want to have it to hand, fetch it any time.
You do not need to complete your Gentoo install using another Linux system but you need to get it to the stage where it can boot and provide networking over your mobile usb key.

See both the Gentoo Handbook and the Alternate Install Guide section 5. You will need both.

Hello,
I think it is safer to install Gentoo using the stage3 with ArchLinux as host. If you can access Internet with ArchLinux, Internet will be available to Gentoo in chroot. In plus, you have your host OS to help you during Gentoo installation.

I haven't use any Gentoo image since very long. I know you need some specials applications to connect to Internet with mobile usb key. In commands lines, I use usb_modeswitch and wvdial to connect to Internet with my own mobile usb key. In graphical mode, NetworkManager do the job correctly.

So, before trying to install Gentoo with a Gentoo bootable media, be sure you can have everething you need to connect to Internet if you want to forward in the installation with this media.

You need to read the file, if it exist, listing the files contained in the image and in the stage3 file in that image, if you hope to connect in chroot after booting the on the image. The kernel module option (USB Driver for GSM modems) is needed and it's dependancies.
