Ok so I'm having an issue with trying to build a kernel for a hardened IRCD. I checked in #gentoo-hardened and they told me to go ahead and file a bug but there's some things that I'm noticing that makes me think there might be something I can do beforehand.

The problem occurs when trying to build kernel/sched/core.o as seen here:

Code:

ircd linux # make
make[1]: Nothing to be done for `all'.
make[1]: Nothing to be done for `relocs'.
  CHK     include/linux/version.h
  CHK     include/generated/utsrelease.h
  CALL    scripts/checksyscalls.sh
  CHK     include/generated/compile.h
make[3]: `arch/x86/realmode/rm/realmode.bin' is up to date.
  CC      kernel/sched/core.o

One thing in particular I noticed was that here recently I changed my use flags to be a little more minimal.. i've done an env-update && source /etc/profile since then but the emerge --info is still showing a crap ton of use flags.. was wondering if I'm going to need to do an "emerge world" to get that to change so as to rebuild the system with the more minimal use flag settings..

As you can see i don't have that many use flags enabled in my make.conf:

Code:

ircd linux # more /etc/portage/make.conf
# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically
# built this stage.
# Please consult /usr/share/portage/config/make.conf.example for a more
# detailed example.
CFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686 -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
# WARNING: Changing your CHOST is not something that should be done lightly.
# Please consult http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/change-chost.xml before changing.
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
# These are the USE flags that were used in addition to what is provided by the
# profile used for building.
USE="mmx sse sse2"
MAKEOPTS="-j2"

SYNC="rsync://rsync.us.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"

I also noticed it stated not to file a bug report unless you can replicate the bugs without the plugins loaded.. I am uneducated as to the process for unloading those plugins.. guy in gentoo-hardened said to go ahead but I just want to be sure as I know the devs have quite enough on their plates as it is.
Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

haxle,

If in doubt, submit a bug report. If the devs don't like it, it will be marked as INVALID.
Ask for some debug help in #gentoo-hardened if you feel you don't have the detial.
You will find the devs who will be reading your bug report there.

Most of the flags you see are set by your profile. Most are also features you would want. There is a nice list here of what they do. For example, you appear to be running a hardened profile, so you need all the trimmings that go with that, like the hardened flag and the pax-kernel flag, and flags like cups is for printing. If you don't want them you will need to specifically unset them in make.conf, but look up what they do first! You may find that it does more harm than good. You may also find that packages require other packages with specific flags as well, so you may have to keep the packages anyway.
