This is something I've been noticing for quite some time now. After (re)starting X it's memory footprint is very small, about 40MB, but after having it running for a couple of days it can grow to hundreds of MBs. Is this normal?

Does it keep on growing or does it just stay at that large size?

X11 does allocate some buffers and keeps them allocated without freeing them, but if it needs to use it again, it will allocate from that pool it already got.

Which driver, btw? And what applications? Does quitting X11 applications help?

What am I supposed to be advocating?

I'll be regularly observing it now to see if I can notice any pattern. x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-310.19, standard KDE4 desktop. When I measure the huge footprint I have just the bare desktop running with the same set of apps as with the initial 40MB measurement.
