If I run df my /home partition appears to hae 2.7G of data on it. If I run du -chxs * on /home it reports a total of 2.7G and shows that 2.6G of it is in /home/alex. If I then cd to /home/alex and run du-chxs * it reports a total of 1.0G.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I find out where the other 1.6G is?
Thanks in Adance,
Alex |

It's probably in files that begin with a leading dot, so try _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

Ok, I had an idea and tried Code: | du -ch --max-depth=1 * | in /home. Bingo! .xauth is 1G !!
it seems that there is an .nfs file in .xauth/root/alex.alex-masidlover.co.uk which is 1G in size. I have absolutely no idea how or why this has happened since alex.alex-masidlover.co.uk does not and has never resolved to an IP address... |

It could also be a file (like a big download in a browser cache) that has been deleted but is still held open by a running process, so it hasn't been reaped yet. Does this same behavior persist across a reboot? _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |
