This afternoon, a routine emerge -uDN world is forcing dev-java/oracle-jdk-bin upon me as a new program. I added it to /etc/portage/package.mask, and it then forces dev-java/oracle-jre-bin on me. Masking them both works.

What's up with this? Why is Gentoo forcing Oracle Java on me?

I was wondering about the same, as I greatly prefer icedtea to oracle's java. It seems to be a dependency of virtual/jdk 1.7, take a look at /usr/portage/virtual/jdk/jdk-1.7.0.ebuild. The icedtea 7 is apparently not ready for prime time, so the virtual is forcing oracle-jdk upon us. Me, I prefer to wait until icedtea 7 is ready. I'll wait for a few days and watch the situation. I may try to unmask the icedtea 7.2.5.4 if it takes too long.

Thank you, leifbk. Good detective work. I think the Virtual jdk 1.7 should have not gone stable. Masking the Oracle jdk and jre prevented the new Virtual jdk 1.7 from being installed, so I think that may be good enough for the short term.

Hi,

If I mask Oracle VM, will the Jdk automatically update to 1.7 with Icedtea when it will become stable ?

I suppose so. I did as figueroa and masked the oracle packages, and now it won't try to emerge the virtual/jdk-1.7.0 at all, supposedly because there are no java 1.7 packages that can be installed on my system. Then, when icedtea 7 is stabilized, the virtual as well as icedtea will be installed.

My bank works perfectly with icedtea 6, so I'm not in a hurry to upgrade :D

Edit: come to think of it, the bank scrapped the java interface a while ago. Don't know if I need java at all anymore.

I will mask oracle.
