I recently switched from my NVIDIA graphics card to the integrated Intel GPU (HD 3000) and I followed the guide at http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Intel_GMA for configuration. Everything is working fine except for one occasional hiccup:

After I believe 10 min of inactivity, the displays are set to sleep mode. Upon moving the mouse or pressing a button on the keyboard, the displays turn on. Occasionally, however, the left monitor (HDMI1) receives a bad signal and causes the display to either appear scrambled or the on-screen display will indicate a bad signal and put the monitor to sleep.

My system boots into the console. I use startx to launch an xsession.

I've tried searching the web using keywords such as { intel, linux, monitor wake, bad signal to monitor, etc } with no luck of a similar issue.

Xinitrc:
xrandr --output HDMI1 --mode 1600x1200 --output HDMI3 --mode 1600x1200 --right-of HDMI1
exec awesome > ~/.awesome_stdout 2> ~/.awesome_stderr

Intel driver version (2.20.13):
x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel sna udev

Kernel 3.5.7 config:
CONFIG_DRM_I915=m
CONFIG_DRM_I915_KMS=y
CONFIG_DRM_KMS_HELPER=m
CONFIG_AGP=m
CONFIG_AGP_INTEL=m

UPDATE:

Upgraded to kernel 3.6.8 and Intel driver 2.20.15 with the same result.

Does anyone have any idea regarding this problem? Even after switching to the latest driver and kernel 3.6.8, I'm still getting it. I even tried a new video cable to see if that could be the problem. No luck.

You should try asking http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/intel-gfx -- they're usually pretty good about helping to debug these kinds of things.
