I upgraded xorg-server xorg-drivers and among these there is upgrade for ati-drivers and xf86-video-ati. xf86-video-ati upgraded succesfully but ati-drivers fails with the following error:

How can I solve the problem? The newer version is called beta but it's stable according to Changelog.
Currently I have ati-drivers version 12.6 but I am not sure if the upgrade of xf86-video-ati will influence on the ati-driver. Should I downgrade xf86-video-ati too?

:roll: That error has nothing to do with kernel - fgl_glxgears needs virtual/glu dep.

Thanks. I will install. It's not installed on my system. Is it a new dependency? I didn't have it until now. It didn't try to pull it either.

EDIT:
Code:

Installing (1 of 2) media-libs/glu-9.0.0
 * This package will overwrite one or more files that may belong to other
 * packages (see list below). You can use a command such as `portageq

 * NOT file a bug report. A bug report is only useful if it identifies at
 * least two or more packages that are known to install the same file(s).
 * If a collision occurs and you can not explain where the file came from
 * then you should simply ignore the collision since there is not enough
 * information to determine if a real problem exists. Please do NOT file
 * a bug report at http://bugs.gentoo.org unless you report exactly which
 * two packages install the same file(s). Once again, please do NOT file
 * a bug report unless you have completely understood the above message.

I was always under the impression that you couldn't have the proprietary (fglrx) and open source (radeon) version of the drivers installed at the same time. The gentoo wiki pages say to turn on DRM in the kernel for one version and turn it off for the other version. *shrug*

Assuming that both can live together, I also noticed that you have VIDEO_CARDS="intel fglrx". Should you have "radeon" in there too? Also, do you have any use flags set for x11-libs/libdrm, media-libs/mesa or x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati set in /etc/portage/package.use? I only ask because of the following line from http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Radeon:

"Support for most recent cards is usually included in newer kernels, however, newer features may only be available in recent versions of the driver. If you need newer versions, try to make sure that you keyword x11-libs/libdrm, media-libs/mesa and x11-drivers/xf86-video-ati at the same time. "

Hope that's helpful. Good Luck.

:roll: :sigh: Other way around - if your mesa is >=9.0 and you need libGLU, you need the separate package.

I am in the same impression. I selected to use the proprietary driver of the card since it has support for opencl too. Therefore, the settings in the kernel are appropriate.
Code:

CONFIG_DRM=y
CONFIG_DRM_KMS_HELPER=y
# CONFIG_DRM_LOAD_EDID_FIRMWARE is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_TDFX is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_R128 is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_RADEON is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_NOUVEAU is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_I2C_CH7006 is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_I2C_SIL164 is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_I810 is not set
CONFIG_DRM_I915=y
CONFIG_DRM_I915_KMS=y
# CONFIG_DRM_MGA is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_SIS is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_VIA is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_SAVAGE is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_VMWGFX is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_GMA500 is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_UDL is not set

They can't so the radeon won't fit in.

I checked and I realized I have some mess with the use flags. So thanks for this. During my setup with the card I played a lot and I didn't notice that I have 3 times libdrm with different use flags.

Code:

grep libdrm /etc/portage/package.use
x11-libs/libdrm  libkms video_cards_intel video_cards_radeon
x11-libs/libdrm video_cards_intel libkms -static-libs -video_cards_nouveau -video_cards_radeon -video_cards_vmware
x11-libs/libdrm video_cards_radeon
The version installed includes
Code:
libkms video_cards_intel video_cards_radeon
So I will correct this.
mesa is with the correct use flags and xf86-video-ati I have to remove probably because I won't put radeon in make.conf.

Hope that's helpful. Good Luck.

The GLU mixup has been reported to https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=432516

The problem is virtual/GLU does not know that mesa-9 no longer provides glu, glu is in its own package now. Mesa-8 had glu built in.

Honestly I don't know how portage will handle it. Basically the virtual package needs to do an if/then type of thing...

virtual/glu:
if mesa-8 is installed, then the dependency is solved.
if mesa-9 is installed, then media-libs/glu is now a dependency of virtual/glu

Weird...

Ran into this issue with another package.... this is annoying.
