Hello,

I'm trying to install a Gentoo only system on a MacBook Pro 5,2 that I was fortunate enough to acquire. I've installed it on a GPT disk with true EFI booting thanks to GRUB 2. When booting, GRUB loads and after you select the kernel it displays "Loading Linux 3.6.2-ck ..." and then nothing else happens. You can still feel and hear hard disk activity though. After building X with the nvidia driver, this behavior changed where after a period of time the "Loading Linux" screen would flash and turn black as if a X driver was being loaded but unfortunately it stays black.

I've tried building the kernel with efifb, vesafb (video=vesafb:mtrr:3,ywrap vga=7680) and no framebuffer, but no luck. Currently it is compiled with vesafb in the kernel. At the end of my dmesg, nvidia loads seemingly successfully:

I don't really need a fancy framebuffer driver, I was just experimenting. I'm happy if I can get X, hardware acceleration and a console:

Sorry that took so long, unfortunately I lost power for a while today. I recompiled the kernel to reflect those options and attempted to build those drivers, which resulted in a build error. My guess is that the build error is not important because it installs nvidia-drivers correctly and the build error only occurs when building nvidia-settings, which attempts to downgrade nvidia-drivers which you would presume is already at a version that will work. However, far be it from me to post too little, so all that debug info is below. Everything else emerges fine (that is emerge nvidia-drivers xf86-input-evdev xf86-input-synaptics).

Unfortunately, with the recompiled kernel and the rebuilt X drivers, the display still doesn't get past "Loading Linux..." :(

Also, I presume the answer to this question is yes, but the image on the EFI partition doesn't contain the kernel right? I only need to have the kernel it's trying to load on /boot and I probably never need to update the EFI image on the EFI partition?

I'll post the build error info here, and at the bottom I'll post my kernel config to make sure (or prove to myself) that we're on the same page

First, the build error.
It builds a different driver set (295.75) that fails when building nvidia-settings as opposed to nvidia-drivers (304.64):

nvidia-settings is irrelevant to your problem with the command line console, sorry I brought it up.
having you rebuild the kernel was intended to remove kms as a probable cause by taking it out, nvidia-drivers, or configuring correctly for nouveau.
unfortunately it appears that kms was not the cause and the kernel load is actually hanging. Except you get a good dmesg that should have echoed on the console...

No worries, I didn't think so, I just try my best to include everything. So the kernel is hanging? I figured since the screen started flashing after I emerged X and since I'm getting fresh Xorg logs which presumably occurs after a kernel load, then that meant that the kernel was loading but the display just wasn't working.

Sorry, I was just expressing my confusion. Got to agree with your conclusion. I would suspect something about efi. http://www.rodsbooks.com/efi-bootloaders/ may be helpful. grub2 with efi has not been getting great reviews.

OMG: menuconfig needs [*] EFI-based Framebuffer Support (NEW)

Yeah, this one's tricky, but this laptop is so nice I want it to work for me :) I'm gonna add in that efifb again and see if it works, then I think I'll compare my kernel config with a similar ck kernel I have running on this nearby netbook. If that doesn't work I might try configuring automatic networking and see if I can make anything interesting happen over SSH/even connect.

Good news!

efifb did the trick, X can start now. Still no console though and therefore no boot sequence to view which is a bit of a bummer though. I can live with that, but do you have any insight on why or how to fix? And thanks again!
