|
|
Hello,
I came from Arch to Gentoo like 4 days ago. I would like to say that I really enjoy Gentoo and I would really like to thank the devs and the community ive communicated with for helping me out.
To the point: I would like to take a backup of my Gentoo setup; specifically I am thinking of backing up my /home, the kernel .config, the /etc/portage/make.conf, the /etc/portage/package.* files that i have edited and I need to have if I mess anything up. Any other suggestions for files to backup so I can trace them back or use them to have somekind of a "guide" in order to install Gentoo at my desktop as well? Does anyone have a script for personal use that would like to share?
Thank you again.

Here's my backup script using rsync.
Backing up everything is especially useful with a source-based distro, so we can copy back over some vital libs if they are messed up |

Thanks much for the replies Really helpful.
One other irrelevant question I remembered when I clicked the link of your signature: As I've seen there are two different gentoo wikis, hosting multiple articles of the same subject, yet sometimes with different implementations and/or dates (wiki.gentoo.org which redirects at www.gentoo.org as the "Home" and en.gentoo-wiki.com). What is their difference? Should I trust one more than another? Sorry for asking via this thread, I just remembered it now.
Thanks again |

gentoo-wiki.com is an unofficial wiki that launched before the Gentoo powers that be caught on and got around to launching wiki.gentoo.org. AFAIK, there were discussions to merge the former into the latter, but they couldn't agree on the licensing/copyright. _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

gentoo-wiki is the old, unofficial wiki, which died.
Things change so fast in Linux land that no guide can be trusted completely, unless it was written yesterday by someone who actually knows what they're writing about |
