My solution was to install XP in VMware. Seems to work OK if you don't try and watch the picture too large. VMware's video isn't the fastest so I throttle my firewall back so when netfilx detects my connection speed it shows up as "basic". Then netflix sends a lower bitrate stream and VMware can keep up, otherwise the picture is a little choppy. Still working on the perfect settings. It's a very hacked up way of doing it, but it beats wasting a partition on windoze. Also, I tried the same thing with qemu. It works, but the movie is very choppy. The video is just to slow in qemu.

:D :D

I wouldn't hold my breath.
I would guess netflix is all tied up in proprietary MS crap.
I don't think it even works in firefox on an MS OS.
You need to run internet exploder err explorer to watch netflix.

Very sad.

Sometimes it seems like they just want you to go to the pirates bay.

aaarrrhhh me heartys!

I've heard(Haven't tried it) that you can use greasemonkey to allow you to watch them. Here is the link:

looks like the greasemonkey script still requires windows to remove the drm once you've downloaded it. oh well, I have a laptop with XP that I use to watch netflix.

It's a pretty nice deal, even though the online stuff is limited, it fills in when you are too lazy to mail your movies back after you're done watching
:?

For the record, you can also use the IE Tab extension in FF to embed IE in a tab, which works great for Instant Watching on Netflix, albeit, on a Windows box.

True, although now Netflix natively supports Firefox with the new movie player.

Can I post a mini-rant here, related to Notflix? :P

You can rent physical DVDs from them, most of which have closed-captions or subtitles, but online - nuh-uh. You're screwed if for any reason you need subtitles. This is redonkulously easy to provide (trust me, I used to do this) and yet they. Just. Won't.

Along with the whole Kow-towing to Em-Ess-Eye-Eee, that's Korporate whogivesashit for ya. :D

*end mini rant*

Looks like we finally have progress on this!
http://www.iheartubuntu.com/2012/11/ppa-for-netflix-desktop-app.html

Here are the manual instructions which might work for us?

Well, I followed the instructions on the site, but it's not working for me. I can get to netflix and it starts to initialize, then I get error N8156 6022 which appears to be some sort of silverlight issue.

I've had succes using the patch for wine used in the aur package for archlinux, here's the link to the package https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/wi/wine-silverlight/wine-silverlight.tar.gz . Inside you'll find a single patch that has to be applied (just put it in /etc/portage/patches/app-emulation/wine) and be sure to emerge wine 1.5.18 . After doing that install firefox 16 and Silverlight 4, you'll also need winetricks to install the microsoft fonts required by the netflix player (to avoid error 1001), just do winetricks allfonts.

Remember that the patch breaks wine compatibility with a lot of other software.

Hope this helps

Got it working with that approach :)
The plugin loaded, and I heard audio, but instead of video I got some static garbled graphics. Once I switched from nvidia to x11 (eselect opengl set x11) the video worked too.

Thanks
Dave

I wasn't able to watch Dutch TV with Firefox either.
They also wanted the Silverlight plugin.
So I tried to find moonlight and finally found a link.
I downloaded from this link and it works like a charm.

No need for Wine or anything else.
Gerard.

PMJI, but is there a plug-in other than moonlight required?

TIA!
