This is a good thing. Personal safety is always a top concern. When I was living in Ohio, if it was going to be really bad on the roads, I stayed indoors. I hate snow, so of course, I'll do everything I can to avoid it.

It's 36.3 degrees here in Pomona. Not cold enough to freeze water, but close. It's a good night to sit with the computer and make kernel seeds. I've just uploaded .configs for 2.6.32-hardened-r144, 3.2.35-hardened-r1, and 3.7.1-hardened-r1 in both x86 and x86_64 flavors. Enjoy!
Audiodef,
The snow will most likely hear me, as it's sure to come down on the mountains nearby. There is nothing like the sight of palm trees juxtaposed with snow-capped mountains. It's out there...way, way out there.
Cheers,

I don't understand the concept of kernel seeds, this is just a .config or something? |

Just a .config? Well, yes, but it's so much more.
The idea is to setup the most used settings, and avoid settings that cause issues, conflicts, or otherwise gum up the works when setting up a Linux machine. If you've never worked on a Linux machine, or have limited knowledge of computers, it helps to have a kernel setup that only requires that you give it just the hardware settings in order to get the system to boot fully. Once the machine is working, you can then set up for more complex operation, if needed.
Do read the information at the site, as NeddySeagoon said.
Cheers,

It's almost 2013, and the folks at tuxonice sources decided that meant it was time to celebrate, with the release of a load of new sources. I've just uploaded .configs for 3.0.57-tuxonice, 3.3.8-tuxonice-r2, 3.4.24-tuxonice, 3.5.7-tuxonice, 3.6.11-tuxonice, and 3.7.1-tuxonice in both x86 and x86_64 flavors. Enjoy!
Six new versions of tuxonice? Sounds like a party to me.
Cheers,
Pappy

Well, the VPN tunnel is up. The "routine" weekly upgrade I did 2 weeks ago, before I wen to Cleveland Ohio for a week on business, was anything but routine.
An "upgrade" to iptables caused my firewall configurations to all fail, and I do some weird things in my firewall setup. See:
http://www.elilabs.com/elilabs_network.html
This is to work around my telephone company's absurd rates for static IP addresses. I get a dsl connection from them with a dhcp address. I use that to connect to my vpn tunnel server co-located at an ISP in a different city with reasonable static IP rates. I then pump a block of static ip's to my dmz over the vpn tunnel. Since this incurs a per p;acket traffic charge, I keep pesky winders laptops that like to watch movies etc. off my regular lan and put them on a separate wifi router that goes directly out to the local dsl connection.
So you can see that having my iptables configurations break while I was out of town was a major pain. I fixed iptables by downgrading to a version that works for me.
Add to that the fact that something also broke my sendmail configuration, so now, although I have my vpn tunnel and firewalls all back up, my mail is broken. It has something to do with clamav-milter.
Almost reminds me of several years ago when expat broke. _________________ The MyWord KJV Bible tool is at http://www.elilabs.com/~myword

I heard about the great expat death. I got to Gentoo like a month or so after that happened. I feel like I dodged a big old bullet on that one.
I was able to ssh to you and to update the site. It seems as though that part is working just fine. The updates took and your mirror is up. I just checked.
Cheers,

pappy_mcfae,
Happy new year pappy.
I've often wondered .. as your seeds are distro agnostic, what sort of a following you have from other distros. _________________ Regards,

Interestingly enough, a lot larger than even I had considered.
Since I track the site, I do know that I get a lot of traffic from Arch, Slackware, and Ubuntu. When I first set up the site, I went to linuxquestions.org, and dropped a few messages here and there, just to see what would happen. Apparently, that was enough to get people to at least stop by. Word of mouth and my google presence has done the rest.
For a while, when the zen-sources folks were actually being fairly productive, their discussion thread put me in contact with people from pretty much every distro that exists. That drove up traffic for a little while, too.
Unfortunately, the Red Hat folks are out of the picture, as they use their own long list of patches that preclude the use of vanilla source kernels. If it's a Red Hat derivative, the seeds won't fly. I know. I had CentOS installed on an old hard drive. It hated the seeds. No boot, period.
That's too bad, as RH derivatives are plentiful, and most RH kernels I've seen are more or less make allmodconfig (all modules). They use initramfs, so that's how they get away with it. I did do some custom building with their sources, and the results were okay, but I really didn't feel like setting up another complete OS to use as a development bed. On a night when I've got lots of source coming in, the hours rack up quite well supporting those distros that will boot with a vanilla kernels.
In the above context, "vanilla" refers to the distro agnostic sources with which I work. Red Hat kernels don't qualify because they are distro specific. As far as I know, they are the only distros that won't work with the seeds.
Cheers,

The first source of 2013 has been released. In response, I've just uploaded .configs for 3.2.36 in both x86 and x86_64 flavors. Enjoy!

Good news number 1: my systems are back up, email included.
Good news number 2: Pappy, do you remember my "nemesis machine"? Well I think I have determined the cause of all that evil. It was a malfunctioning ethernet board. Since that particular board has died, the system has performed flawlessly. It was an old 100baseT PCI clone, but PCI allows bus mastering, so I guess it could cause a lot of ruckus if it was acting up. I thought you would like to hear the end of that long story.
Now all I need to do is find a new contract to keep me amused this year, and hopefully making some money, and I will be a happy camper! _________________ The MyWord KJV Bible tool is at http://www.elilabs.com/~myword

The Nemesis Machine is dead? Let the freakin' celebrations begin! That was one of my more difficult cases.
I'm glad to hear all is back to normal. FreeBSD comes with sendmail, which is all fine and good, except that if you don't configure it, boot times increase dramatically as you want for sendmail to quit having spasms. As I was reading the docs, I just kept wondering why I would need it. I suppose it would be cool to have an email like pappy@kernel-seeds.org, which I could make happen with sendmail. Still, I've already got too many email addresses already. I don't really think I need more.
Fortunately, I was able to stop sendmail from coming up at boot time. One of these days, I might actually take a look at it and maybe even set it up.
Cheers,

I have no intent of messing with sendmail any time soon. I haven't needed it with Gentoo up to this point. I don't see the need in FreeBSD. It comes pre-installed, and if not configured, it eats three minutes up at boot time. Thanks, but no thanks.
On the brighter side, I grafted the FreeBSD setup I'd been messing with on the main hard drive for this machine, next to Gentoo. Now I don't have to swap hard drives. My windows install bit the dust, but on the other hand, I didn't use it a lot. The most I've done with it lately was to update the virus program and do the MS update as well. Other than holding my music collection locally, there was nothing special about my windows setup.
Now, the music hangs out on the FreeBSD partition. I can access my music under Linux, as UFS can be mounted under Linux as read-only. There's a setting that allows for read/write, but I'm going to wait until the remove the word "DANGEROUS" from the help before I give it a try. The transfer of files is so much smoother than it was with an ntfs partition. The use of ntfs-3g added a layer of math that slowed transfers to and from that partition. It also added CPU cycles.
Well, I've done what I wanted to for this day.
Cheers,

No problem. I honestly don't see it happening at all, or at least any time in the near future. I have a few other projects I want to try, not the least of which is a FreeBSD/Gentoo hybrid. I know that such a thing exists, as there is documentation to make it happen. I have the stage-3 for it all ready and waiting for me to get a start on that particular project.
Cheers,
