I am in the process of stalling Gentoo on an AMD64 laptop. Up until now I have been able to succesfully emerge --sync but now I gertthe following error.

Code:
!!! getaddrinfo failed for 'rsync.gentoo.org': [Errno -2] Name or service not known >>> Starting rsync with rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage... >>> Checking server timestamp ... rsync: getaddrinfo: rsync.gentoo.org 873: Name or service not known rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at clientserver.c(122) [Receiver=3.0.9] >>> Retrying... !!! Exhausted addresses for rsync.gentoo.org

Any ideas?

did you copy /etc/resolv.conf into the chroot (usually from outside the chroot: cp -L /etc/resolv.conf /mnt/gentoo/etc/)?

or how does your /etc/resolv.conf look like?

I don't remember doing that. I used http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml for my install and it didn't instruct to do that. What is strange is that it was working fine up until the point that I actually booted the system after the install.

My /etc/resolv.conf looks like it is empty. Should I copy as suggestd from outside chrooted environment?:

or an edit to /etc/resolv.conf.head to add that same "nameserver 8.8.8.8"

if he just puts it in /etc/resolv.conf, dhcpcd will clobber it the next time it fires off - no clue why his dhcp server isn't giving him a nameserver, however
