Hi,

I don't do python dev.

But I have some packages requiring some python version to be installed.

The problem there seems to be many parameters to influence how such packages are installed.

/etc/portage/make.conf file via
Code:
#USE_PYTHON="2.7 3.3 3.4"
USE_PYTHON="2.7 3.4"
#USE_PYTHON="2.7"

#PYTHON_TARGETS="-jython2_5 -jython2_7 -python2_6 python2_7 python3_2 python3_3$
PYTHON_TARGETS="python2_7 python3_4"
#PYTHON_TARGETS="python2_7 python3_3 python3_4"

PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET="python2_7"
#PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET="python3_4"
packages USE flags such as python, python_single_target, python_targets.

and finally python default system settings via eselect python settings.

Every 3 months or so, systems are recompiled as a whole via emerge -e world.

Obviously current settings cause some package to build with/against more that one version of python, sometimes uselessly.*
Such a list is not determined yet.

Nevertheless I'm sure some packages can only deal with python2.7 whereas other can python 3.4 too.

Moreover some packages have python_single_target along with python_targets USE flags.

How to set system in make.conf & package.use to go python2.7 when python3.4 is'nt supported yet.

Thks for ur attention.

I was confused trying to understand your question.

Do you hit issues with specific packages? These can be bugs. Please post more details (package names etc) in that case.

Otherwise, why not just remove references to 3.4 from your config?

Well, my apologies...
I have xen 1 dom0 / 4 domu architecture on my i3 laptop,
-lto -graphite & open-mp are default.
So compile time is challenging, with emerge -e in particular...

As it seems I have to keep python 2.7, while favoring when possible latest python I BELIEVE to be faster, for example numpy is builded for both version of python (~30 mn).
My wish is to have only 3.4 activated for each package supporting it whereas 2.7 to remain the default for the rest requiring python.
And doing so with minimal work in
Code:
/etc/portage/packages.use

Not cristal clear maybe... Trying hard!

Thks 4 ur attention, interest & support

Please see https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Python/PYTHON_TARGETS and post here if you hit problems just trying to set the make.conf python variables to 3.4.
