I am using Thunderbird 16.0.1 on an amd64 system. I have recently noticed that the mime-types for many file types are not set up correctly and the method that Thunderbird uses to locate default actions is also lame.

A particular example for a file type of .JPG is Internet Explorer under wine. If you reject that and select Other... you are presented with a file selection box, which makes it possible to locate an appropriate file viewer, but extremely inconvenient. KDE programs seem to come up with an image of the Start menu, for example.

It seems to me that this behavior is new; previous versions acted like Unix programs.

Is there a way to get Thunderbird to use a Linux oriented mime-type?
