I ran into the same problem described in Debian Bug #366881.
The fix worked on Gentoo ~amd64:

Desktop name "user@hostname"
VNC server default format:
32 bits per pixel.
Least significant byte first in each pixel.

Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-helvetica-bold-r-*-*-16-*-*-*-*-*-*-*" to type FontStruct
Warning: Unable to load any usable ISO8859 font

Error: Aborting: no font found
$ echo "*popup*font: fixed" | xrdb -merge
$ vncviewer ipaddr
(works) |
What should I do to make that permanent? File a bug, and for which package (tightvnc or an X component)? or an rc file setting?
