Now that my system is pretty stable, I'm trying to play with the cosmetics a bit. I run openbox, with a slim for the display manager. Currently there are no programs installed to set a background for openbox, so it retains the background set by slim. I like it this way.
I would also like to have transparent terminals. At least for guake and terminator.

In guake the options are in the preferences but they do not work.

I found this documentation on xcompmgr at"
http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/X.Org/Transparency

which is pretty interesting, but like I said I would prefer not to have an overlay and I don't see anything in the options about shutting it off.

Has anyone else got tansparency in guake working?

I know there is SLiM login manager. What is slim display manager and how do you run it with Openbox? Just wondering.

Bad terminology on my part. Slim is the login manager, XDM display manager

Openbox does not have compositing built in. If you want transparency you will need xcompmgr, compton, cairo-compmgr, etc.. There is not another way to get it working. After experimenting with most of them the one I have found most stable for me is xcompmgr. Which I run like this if I want compositing:
Code:

xcompmgr -cCfF -r7 -o.65 -l-10 -t-8 -D7

In the end though I gave up on compositing completely as I found that it only makes my systems feel slower and buggier. Your mileage may vary.

I think slim and xdm serve the same purpose pretty much. I don't think you can run them both at the same time.

Honestly, this system was originally built around being fast, and at this point it still is. If it is going to be this much of a pain in the butt, and slow down the system, I may just skip it.

As for Slim and XDM, I am very confused about what is what.
When my computer is booting is says " Starting SLiM"
When I want to configure my login manager I do it in /etc/slim.conf
however when I type rc-status there is no slim, only xdm?

Have a look at transet..
Code:

emerge transet-df.

I am pretty sure xdm is setup as a meta daemon/service that will start other display managers. You're doing it right as far as I know (xdm -> slim). My understanding of this is limited though since I do not use a display manager.

They really are more of a pain in the but than they are worth. Even slim really slows down old systems.
No real advantages other than being pretty

I autologin my system to openbox without a display manager. It's pretty simple. Just edit inittab to autologin on a getty and then setup a .bash_profile or .zprofile (for zsh (what I use)) to xinit your .xinitrc login file.

/etc/conf.d/xdm

I'd use compton for transparency. You can start it with autostart/ using openbox-session, or by .xinitrc when using startx. Or you can start it manually while running openbox and it makes terminals that support real transparency transparent immediately.
