Since the audio player rhythmbox seems to be permanently stuck on version 0.13. I was wondering if there where any decent replacement players out there that I can use to play mp3, ogg and so on.

Thanks for the help.

My favorite players:
1- mpd + gmpc (I can't live without. I believe my searching is ended after I found this combo)
2- exaile
3- quodlibet

Edit: As tclover pointed, you can also use "mpd" overlay if you want live versions of mpd + gmpc without editing any ebuild.

Beware that the ebuilds are all based on git-2 (customized) eclass meaning that if you want to get them working in your local overlay you had to edit/swap EGIT_TAG for EGIT_BRANCH and it should work... I proposed a patch to git-2 eclass to the maintainer a few months ago because of a possible issue merging a live ebuild with a tag which could be troublesome but it get almost ignored. Otherwise add the overlay if you have any interest of using a few ebuilds.

I switched to mpd+gmpc a while back because of gmb is a little monster to run continuously... after reporting a few feedback to squenting the developer. I switched specifically for CUE support because I could live with a full featured heavy resources (RAM particular which is caused by not killing child process: no idea if that issue is fixed yet) usage media player.

I'd like to use mpd+ario combination but it lacks support for adding CUE titles when mpd support it, ridiculous. I prefer ario interface to gmpc but meh I had to stick to it.

I've re-emerged quodlibet which I used a while back for a standard player because I was sic of audacious despite a good native OSS4 support, darn. Yes, I need a standard player for time to time until gmb get better or at least CUE support.

If you're just looking for something similar to Rhythmbox, Banshee is pretty close. If you're willing to try KDE apps, Amarok or Clementine (if you prefer the style of ye olde amarok.)

My two cents.

I tried gmusicbrowser as yellowhat suggested, and I like it.

What doesn't work:

Rhythmbox crashes and is unusable.

Smplayer is quite stable, but doesn't have a lot of features. If you just want the player to start playing random songs from your library on startup, Smplayer can't do that. You would have to create the playlist first.

Banshee pulls in a lot of garbage, and at least for me today, failed to emerge because of a problem with notify-sharp.

Please elaborate on how you use these two products.

I would also hazard a guess that at the current rate of improvement, there will soon be a way to keep the files on Google Drive and have them selectively synced to remote devices. This is just in its infancy with services like DriveTunes working only as Chrome Apps, but it can't be too far off. Ideally, no important files would be kept locally, and it shouldn't be necessary to maintain a server for such a common purpose.

MPD is the backend and is really easy to configure. It has a great wiki.
My music is stored on a local server.
I use GMPC to play my tunes, and it is also easy to configure.

My requirements are:

1. Ability to play flac files on my Android phone, linux desktop, Windows laptop, and iPad.
2. Ability to download the files via wifi for offline playback later on the laptop, iPad, and mobile phone.
3. No transcoding to mp3 during playback.

The only solution I have found to all the above is subsonic.
