Edit: In the process of editing this post with more current information, I solved the issue. Turns out gst-plugins-ffmpeg must be installed. I added USE=ffmpeg for gst-plugins-meta and all is well. I have filed a bug report.
HTML5 video doesn't work in www-client/firefox-17.0-r1. The video area is blank, but controls and audio work. I've tried this with YouTube, video.js, and with my own minimal HTML file (see post #3).

I did a test to make sure this isn't a YouTube specific problem. I downloaded a video and loaded it with some simple html5. Here's the <body>, in its entirety:

Same thing - audio works, but no video frames ever get rendered. Same with mp4 format. I also tried downgrading to =libvdpau-0.4.1-r1 - no change. Will try downgrading nvidia-drivers shortly. Would be nice if I knew where to look for debug info... |
