ts1971 :

Giving us the command you type is of no help, do you think we need to get teach with that ?

Code:

ifconfig

just shows the loopback interface.

Code:

ifconfig -a

shows both eth0 and the loopback interface.

This kind of info is more informative

here is my attempt at dhcpcd:

Code:

livecd ~# dhcpcd eth0
dhcpcd[20192]: open `/var/run/dhcpcd-eth0.pid': No such file or directory

Look at that
Code:
ifconfig -a
eth0: flags=4163<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST>  mtu 1500
        inet 192.168.0.4  netmask 255.255.255.0  broadcast 192.168.0.255
        ether 00:26:18:2f:cc:06  txqueuelen 1000  (Ethernet)
        RX packets 38311  bytes 53876203 (51.3 MiB)
        RX errors 0  dropped 0  overruns 0  frame 0
        TX packets 20612  bytes 1625354 (1.5 MiB)
        TX errors 0  dropped 0 overruns 0  carrier 0  collisions 0

lo: flags=73<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING>  mtu 16436
        inet 127.0.0.1  netmask 255.0.0.0
        loop  txqueuelen 0  (Boucle locale)
        RX packets 340  bytes 21108 (20.6 KiB)
        RX errors 0  dropped 0  overruns 0  frame 0
        TX packets 340  bytes 21108 (20.6 KiB)
        TX errors 0  dropped 0 overruns 0  carrier 0  collisions 0

Don't you think this speak better than
Quote:
Code:
 ifconfig eth0 up

ifconfig does in fact list eth0 along with the loopback interface. Still no luck with ping though.

Code:
MAC address: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx (obviously there is a real address here)

Because any packet sent is sent with it in it, there no real need to hide something that will be grab if anyone connect to your network : it means security = 0
Same for your IP, you said you use a linksys router and cable modem, so your IP must be in the local network range and not your internet IP. Again harmless.
(because i think it prevent you from posting information that will ease helper figuring what is going on, and gentoo forum aren't hackmyass forum, and our good admin will edit any posts to filter out sensible datas if you made a mistake, and guess what, you have NeddySeagoon on your thread, so it will happen more than fast then)

Now for a more helping stuff :
You could eth0 up all you wish, if eth0 is not your ethernet card it will "seems" to never work.
Not only ethernet cards will grab ethX value, per example look here : https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-6646339.html#6646339 (yeah i love quoting myself)

I would imagine that that was intended to be snarky though in fact it was just incoherent. In any event, as I mentioned in my previous post, the elided information had nothing to do with security, it was just a simple function of the fact that I had no way to cut / paste information from the machine in question to the machine on which I'm posting. In those cases where I included output it was only because I typed it all manually. Geez.

Oh, you aren't as lazy as me then, too painful to put that by hands. You should put them in a file and move it with an usb key if possible.
