First gentoo install for me, leaving debian because it's too slow on this iBook G4.

Following along in the handbook: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-ppc.xml

...and I'm stuck at step 7.b. After a few hours, in which it looks like its copying the kernel sources to /usr/src/linux-3.4.9-gentoo, it fails with
Code:

Failed to install sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-3.4.9

The whole log file is 20k lines, but the gist of it is this

Code:

^[[32;01m * ^[[39;49;00mPackage:    sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-3.4.9
^[[32;01m * ^[[39;49;00mRepository: gentoo

^[[32;01m * ^[[39;49;00mUSE:        elibc_glibc kernel_linux ppc userland_GNU
^[[32;01m * ^[[39;49;00mFEATURES:   sandbox

>>> Copying sources ...
>>> Completed installing gentoo-sources-3.4.9 into /var/tmp/portage/sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-3.4.9/image/

At this point, it lists a bunch of files starting with /usr/src/linux-3.4.9-gengoo. I'm assuming its copying them from /var/tmp/portage/sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-3.4.9/ into /usr/src.

Then, the end of the log has this
Code:

>>>Searching all installed packages for file collisions...
>>>
>>>Press Ctrl-C to Stop
>>>
>>>None of the installed packages claim the file(s).
>>>
>>>Package 'sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-3.4.9' merged despite file
>>>collisions. If necessary, refer to your elog messages for the whole
>>>content of the above message.

It looks like all the source files are in portage/sys-kernel, but it fails while copying to /usr/src. Since it fails, the /usr/src/linux link is never created.

Even if I cd to /usr/src/linux-3.4.9-gentoo/ and do a make pmac32_defconfig, it complains that it can't find the powerpc Makefile customizations @ /usr/src/linux-3.4.9-gentoo/arch/powerpc/Makefile. The arch/ dir doesn't exist in the sources copied to /usr/src, so it must fail some time before that.

df shows 91% of the disk free, so the copying isn't failing due to no space being available.

The log doesn't include any information about what is failing.

Here is the result of emerge --info
Code:

Portage 2.1.11.9 (default/linux/powerpc/ppc32/10.0, gcc-4.5.4, glibc-2.15-r2, 3.2.1-gentoo-r2-ppc32 ppc)

Welcome!

You may be out of inodes
Code:
df -i

Putting portage to NFS and sharing it with other boxes on your LAN is a good idea.

Ah, didn't think of that. Alas, I am only using 14% of total inodes.

bryanvick,

fetch a kernel from kernel.org. This is identical to vanilla-sources, if you choose the right version.

gentoo-sources is this kernel with a few patches from later kernel back ported, so it will
a) get you going
b) provide more information if it fails.

Is /usr (or / root)) out of space?

Thanks NeddySeagoon. This is also my first kernel compile, so the whole thing is rather mysterious.

I simply used rsync to get the rest of the files in ..portage/sys-kernel... to copy to /usr/src/...

It seems to be working. I'm at least able to move onto step 7.c in the handbook.

I had the same problem today. Failed while copying from portage image directory to /usr/src.
My /usr/src is bind mounted to an external hard drive plenty of space and inodes.
My portage is on the same hard drive.

I had to rsync the rest of the files....

Nothing to help in the build.log :-(
