I believe this is a know bug for VirtualBox. Do you still have the CD mounted?
I had the same error, but the system booted into grub after unmounting the Gentoo CD-image from the virtualmachines settings.

Removing the ISO CD Drive of the Virtualbox Fixed the issue for me as well. I can boot fine now. |
