Just saw this tidbit of news. Just curious why ?? Any infos would be great

Starting next week, new stages will have make.conf and make.profile
moved from /etc to /etc/portage. This is a change in the installation
defaults, that will only affect new installs so it doesn't affect
current systems.
Current users don't need to do anything. But if you want to follow the
preferred location, you may want to take the chance to move the files
in your system(s) to the new location. |

I was going to post with similar questions, but you beat me to it.
My main questions are this, have other portage tools and applications already been made aware of these changes? For example, if I move make.conf from /etc to /etc/portage will ufed still work as intended? How about other tools such as Porthole or GPytage? How about eselect profile? Does it know to read the symlink in the the new location or place the new symlink there?
I'm not sure I want to move such important configuration files until I'm assured I'd be safe doing so. |

thanks for that your reading my mind I work at an enterprise hoster and lots of our customers have gentoo boxes installed. It would be really nice to have some more infos on such major changes as well the impact to other services.

that said such major changes with no further infos / documentation seems like a seat of the pants change "lets just do XYZ". This mentality seems to be plaguing gentoo lately. Don't get me wrong, imho gentoo is still the best by far but look at the wiki documentation and infos provided. Why are all of us outside the circle constantly left in the dark? |

Many of the tools have been changed so they read make.conf in the new location, but not all. Porthole and gpytage, I have to do still. Sorry, but I've not been accomplishing much coding for the past while...Life, family, work have been getting in the way.
The best is to submit bugs for the tools that you find NOT yet supporting the new location.
The move actually started a couple years ago with portage supporting the new location. The reason was to get all portage related configs in one location. It was just recently that the default location changed to the new one in /etc/portage. There is no time limit set for supporting the old location in /etc.

lol your funny, and although I get your point. Ever heard of change management ? Anyone with hardened systems will know what Im talking about. |

For me testing it out ufed breaks, eselect profile breaks
I moved the make.conf and make.profile to /etc/portage and created symlinks in /etc to keep the other tools happy. |

ufed is not yet fixed, but eselect is (I just looked at the code of the current stable 1.3.1) - if eselect profile really breaks you should file a bug.
For ufed not working, I am actually rather happy as it is now: I use /etc/make.conf exclusively for my USE variable (and source /etc/make.conf from /etc/portage/make.conf): I do not like if a tool touches my main configuration file. |

On my oldest machine, I've got another symlink

I assume that can be deleted.
