theres also this:
http://www.beachaudio.com/Lenovo/261729u-p-571580.html
I know gentoo is all about configuring the system to the hardware at hand,
and since I couldnt find my video card anywhere in either of the bpaste links
I posted it here in the aforementioned link.
It is the 7660G btw.

Edit: Quick question while the kernel source emerges: if I were to have bought a non proprietary video card, would I have been able to configure the software for it to make it faster? Does that make sense?
Also, are the non proprietary laptop video cards out there good enough for intense gaming/video editing?

Edit: Done emerging. Did I do this right?
Code:
(chroot) mint / # ls /usr/share/zoneinfo

after you have followed the handbook and emerged gentoo-sources:
Code:
cd /usr/src/linux
wget http://kernel-seeds.org/seeds/64_bit/gentoo/3.4.9-gentoo-x86_64-08.config
mv 3.4.9-gentoo-x86_64-08.config .config
which will give you a pappy's kernel seeds .config file.

Done... What is this for again? Is this an alternative to manual kernel configuration?

it is a better start for manual configuration than you would get otherwise. I will post my guess for additional drivers you need to add to pappy's shortly.

after getting the kernel seed, changing its name to .config, stay in /usr/src/linux directory, run make menuconfig then add your drivers, when done editing, exit saving configuration, and pick up handbook at make && make modules_install when you get to grub you will need grub2 more to follow on that

my suggestions for adapting kernel seed to your lenovo,

Should I check (*) the ones you have checked AND uncheck the ones that you have unchecked, or only check the ones you have checked?

check where checked, uncheck where unchecked, some i left out for sake of brevity and thinking that choice could be either way

http://dev.gentoo.org/~scarabeus/grub-2-guide.xml is the reference not the handbook when you get to grub
I have seen claims that legacy grub can now handle gpt however ....
the shortform
Code:
nano /etc/portage/package.keywords
edit to add
Quote:
<sys-boot/grub-9999 ~amd64
ctrl-x to close saving
Code:
emerge --ask --tree --verbose sys-boot/grub:2 os-prober linux-firmware
grub2-install --no-floppy /dev/sda
os-prober
grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

How do I get out of this?
http://i.imgur.com/HQerr.png

I typed
"find /lib/modules/3.4.9/ -type f -iname '*.o' -or -iname '*.ko' | less"
instead of
"find /lib/modules/<3.4.9>/ -type f -iname '*.o' -or -iname '*.ko' | less"

looks good
i would delete: cdrom line --a legacy, it interferes with automounting
i would add: shm /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
shm line may be useless now also, i picked it up the hard way, but a long while ago

ext4 according to
Code:
mount

I am going to try to do this as quick as possible since it seems you are leaving and I want to get it done before then.

I already left the chroot environment it seems using env-update && source /etc/profile.

I am going to emerge metalog since it is the most customizable (as customizability is something i value highly). I will learn how to customize it later, ater I am done doing the basic install of gentoo.

I will skip all the optional emerges unless you convince me otherwise.

you must be in chroot to emerge, and should still be, check ls -l / for snapshot and tarball

steps 10a,10b, 10c should be replaced by:

http://dev.gentoo.org/~scarabeus/grub-2-guide.xml is the reference not the handbook when you get to grub
I have seen claims that legacy grub can now handle gpt however ....
the shortform
Code:
nano /etc/portage/package.keywords
edit to add
Quote:
<sys-boot/grub-9999 ~amd64
ctrl-x to close saving
Code:
emerge --ask --tree --verbose sys-boot/grub:2 os-prober linux-firmware
grub2-install --no-floppy /dev/sda
os-prober
grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

I did do both. I was referring to:
Code Listing 3.8: Setting the default system locale in /etc/env.d/02locale

LANG="de_DE.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="C"
In which I believe you can only choose one.
************
When I did the following:
Code Listing 3.9: Reload shell environment

# env-update && source /etc/profile
I automatically exited chroot. Do I still need to re-enter chroot?
