PostPosted: Sat Sep 08, 2012 3:35 pm    Post subject: Can't start X with radeon HD2400 Reply with quote

I have installed Calculate 12.0.3 XFCE into my notebook with Radeon HD2400 video card
I selected the fglrx driver during installation (Gentoo linux has been working on ati-drivers 11.8 for 2 years)
Emerged calculate-sources-3.4.10 and ati-drivers-12.4 (ati-drivers 12.6 don't support HD2400, can't compile ati-drivers-12.4 with kernel 3.5)

generated xorg.conf: aticonfig -f --initial
tried to start X: startx

got error: No valid linear framebuffer address

With radeon HD2400 use open drivers, configured according to the procedure here:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/xorg-config.xml

Also remove the xorg.conf file, it won't (probably) be needed.

just to explain why gorkypl suggested to use the foss driver, ATI has decided from 12.6 if I'm not mistaken to drop of all chips below 5xxx.
if you must use the proprietary driver, use 12.4 else use the foss

Thanks Daggy, I have always admired your manner of explaining things that seem to be simple :)

Another reason is that (AFAIK) foss drivers have better performance for this card.

Thanks. I'll try radeon driver too.

Btw, I tried and got the error above with ati-drivers-12.4 and kernel 3.4.10
Is there way to fix it?

The ati-drivers-12.6_beta_pre897 is the last version to work with the HD2400.

Please see it in the first message.

Also I tried open radeon drivers. I got error on boot: "fatal error during gpu init"
I found notes about KMS configuration in Arch
but how can I do this in Gentoo?

don't install both drivers, select one, move xorg.conf a side and try without xorg.conf

Btw, my old Gentoo installation works fine with proprietary ati-drivers-11.8 (Gnome 2)
But I tried ati-drivers-12.4 and got "No valid linear framebuffer address" (see my initial post with complete log and xorg.conf) on startx

I've made another clean install with open source drivers and configured them by Gentoo docs

have you installed and defined the firmware?

there is no need to reinstall the system in case something goes wrong (in most cases), you can remove the program/config and try again, this isn't windows.
have you tried 12.4 without any xorg.conf?

I installed linux-firmware and did kernel configuration:
Code:

Device Drivers --->
  Generic Driver Options --->
[*]  Include in-kernel firmware blobs in kernel binary
  (radeon/R600_rlc.bin radeon/R700_rlc.bin) External firmware blobs
   (/lib/firmware/) Firmware blobs root directory

Do I need something else?

I have 2 separate installations of same OS on HDD and SSD with different drivers: with opensource and ati-drivers. Let's what drivers work
I haven't tried 12.4 without any xorg.conf. I'll try

yes, you've selected only one of the fw files, what card do you have?

I have radeon HD2400. Seems, I need R600 file only.
Thanks! I had some doubts before about this item (if choose only one file or both)

So I'll change the firmware file and recompile / install the kernel and its ramfs file.

put the following: radeon/RS780_pfp.bin radeon/RS780_me.bin radeon/R600_rlc.bin

did make, make install, make modules_install, cl-kernel --initrd
and rebooted: same error about GPU :(

ps. messages on make:
Code:

Makefile: 207: warning: overriding recipe for target /firmware/radeon/RS780_pfp.bin.gen.S
Makefile: 204: warning: ignoring old recipe for target /firmware/radeon/RS780_pfp.bin.gen.S

the same for RS780_me.bin

btw, I tried on another installation with ati radeon legacy drivers 12.6 without xorg.conf: the system tries to use xorg.conf.d and radeon driver and got the same linearbuffer address error as with xorg.conf

well you seem to miss some step, are you using genkernel?

I think so.
I don't use genkernel. I use cl-kernel --initrd for initramfs file generation (it calls genkernel):
Code:

* Gentoo Linux Genkernel; Version 3.4.18
* Running with options: --cachedir=/var/cache/genkernel --tempdir=/var/calculate/tmp/genkernel --splash=calculate --unionfs --all-ramdisk-modules --disklabel --no-save-config --firmware --udev --lspci --kerneldir=/usr/src/linux --module-prefix=/ --loglevel=1 --makeopts=-j3 --kernel-config=/var/lib/layman/calculate/profiles/kernel/config-desktop-x86_64-3.4 --bootdir=/boot --no-mrproper ramdisk

Is this ok that we use RS780_ files (not RS600_) ? Just to double check...

yes, that is right.

as I'm not using either initfamfs and nor genkernel, I cannot help you much.
my best bet is that the firmware isn't included somehow in the initfamfs.

isn't there a generic config for genkernel?
