If I use kernel 3.5 with my i965 (Ironlake), X appears in delightful 16-bit colour mode, although all diagnostics report 24-bit colour. Anyone else seen this?
It's easy to check at this monitor test page: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/gradient.php
Cheers.

Is your LCD 24-bit, or 18-bit?

That is a fair question, but yes, I have already somewhat embarrassingly verified that the problem is not with the display panel by trying another.

However, thanks for reminding me, what is confusing is that the colour will work fine on an external monitor. It's just the laptop's display that stops displaying 24-bit colour. I agree that sounds like a problem with the display panel, but I'm 99.9% sure that it is not.

Can anyone test to check this out? Thanks, cheers.

The Intel drivers should do internal temporal dithering when they detect a low depth screen, it sounds like an update broke it again. It's happened before.
