Isn't there a aticonfig setup for fglrx :?:

I don't think X -configure will generate the correct configuration settings for the closed source driver.

Forget those autoconfigs. Delete your xorg.conf, you won't need any unless you're using a proprietary binary blob driver or have some really special setup. In the former case it's only a 3- or 4-liner telling xorg which binary blob to load.

hmm.. i just fired up aticonfig, and it says "no supported device" ?? its an onboard radeon HD 3300 and it used to work fine all the time..

about xorg.conf .. if i fire up startx as root (just to test if it works) it creates an xorg.conf from scratch.. xorg.conf.new.. pity i am on windows now and can't do screencopys.. however.. i wil move the confs away and give /etc/xdm start another chance..

any other hints what the problems could be? the device is of course shown with lspci.. or is this a "politics" issue somehow with ATI and linux?

It's an issue of AMD dropping support for pre-Evergreen cards in their mainline driver. There's a 12.6-legacy driver that still has support. What's marked as 12.6_beta_pre897 in portage installs this legacy driver.

And genstorm is right, forget about auto-configurators. All you need is
Code:
Section "Device"
    Identifier  "Radeon card"
    Driver      "fglrx"
EndSection
