I guess my case is a little bit different from the OP's issue, but here is something that worked just in case it affects others. I kept getting the following error message (I masked the MAC and SSID to protect the innocent).

Successfully initialized wpa_supplicant
wlo1: SME: Trying to authenticate with --:--:--:--:--:-- (SSID='' freq=2412 MHz)
wlo1: Trying to associate with --:--:--:--:--:-- (SSID='' freq=2412 MHz)
wlo1: Associated with --:--:--:--:--:--
wlo1: CTRL-EVENT-DISCONNECTED bssid=--:--:--:--:--:-- reason=3 locally_generated=1

It turned out that "/etc/init.d/NetworkManager" was running, so once I turned it off, everything worked OK.
