First build on an x86_64-pc-linux-gnu box, the firefox 10.0.6 configure is looking
for event.h and not finding it. Checking with emerge --search shows that
libevent is not installed. (I guess this should be a dependency of the firefox
package, since configure is running with the "-with-system-libevent" command
line option.)

then you did something wrong - firefox-10.0.6 is dependent on libevent.
Code:
root@belshirash ~ # equery d libevent
 * These packages depend on libevent:
app-misc/tmux-1.6 (>=dev-libs/libevent-2.0.10)
                  (<dev-libs/libevent-2)
dev-libs/libverto-0.2.4 (libevent ? >=dev-libs/libevent-2.0)
net-fs/nfs-utils-1.2.6 (nfsv4 ? >=dev-libs/libevent-1.0b)
www-client/chromium-21.0.1180.57 (>=dev-libs/libevent-1.4.13)
www-client/firefox-10.0.6 (>=dev-libs/libevent-1.4.7)

So it is. Maybe I just missed it in the
Code:

(emerge -Dp firefox) 2>&1 | tee firefox.list

list of packages that needed to be merged beforehand.

(I don't like to have all of the build logs of dependencies lumped
together, so I build each package separately, and its emerge log
ends up in a per-category directory in a "/var/log/[emerge logs]"
directory. This practice has this weakness, that you might miss one
emerging them individually by hand. On updates, I can usually keep
up. Sometimes, however, there is a long list, especially on a new
install.)
