This is probably due to the pulseaudio vs alsa conflict. I ended up completely disabling pulseaudio (USE=-pulseaudio and emerge --newuse) as it's been more of a problem than the benefits it provides, mainly because of its interaction with wine audio.

Now I don't know the exact problem you're seeing... this is just a guess.

this is a bump to say this issue is not yet resolved for me. my sisters gentoo box does not have this problem and i did not have to alter the use flags on hers. this machine blocks off html audio if flash is playing, and also crosses over into the os, no audacious play, and i highly suspect no VLC play either at the time that html5 or flash is locking down my resources. i just wish they would play nicely together, but i foresee a formatting due to 1 machine working, and the other not. our hardware setups are almost identical....

Same USE flags?
same audio hardware?
Compare the two emerge --info?

I always had this problem on my Gentoo installation. In any browser and any audio- video-player, except, if I listen internet radio in player (like QMMP), then I can hear sound if put something play in browser.

Now, I'm used to, turn off player if I wanna see youtube videos.

I start to think that something is not enough in kernel config.
