Hi,

I've recently installed gentoo on a 4-year-old Dell laptop (core 2 duo T7300, 2 GB RAM, Geforce 8400 GS).

This is the output of emerge --info

All is working fine except lyx 2.0.4 (for version 2.0.3 it's the same). I get this error whenever I launch it:

Code:
LyX has caught an exception, it will now attempt to save all unsaved documents and exit.

Exception: std::bad_alloc

Maybe I should try to recompile it with different CXXFlags (i guess lyx it's written in C++, not C)? For example CXXFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -march=native". The strange thing is that I've compiled lyx 2.0.4 on another machine (core i3-2310M, 4GB RAM) with the same CXXFLAGS posted in my emerge --info and it works fine... Any Suggestions? should I file a bug?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: I tried with the flags I wrote about above (CXXFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -march=native".) but with no luck...

Hi nihil39,
This error is issued when a new program cannot allocate more memory. That's weird.
Does the lyx compilation finished right?
You can file a bug in Gentoo's Bugzilla site.

Hi, yes the compilation finished in the right way at the best of my knowledge and lyx appears in the menu entry as it should (I'm using xfce4).

Code:
app-office/lyx-2.0.4 was built with the following:
USE="X cups hunspell latex (multilib) nls svg xetex -aspell -debug -dia -docbook -dot -enchant -gnumeric -html -luatex -monolithic-build -rcs -rtf -subversion" LINGUAS="en it -ar -ca -cs -da -de -el -es -eu -fi -fr -gl -he -hu -ia -id -ja -nb -nn -pl -pt -ro -ru -sk -sr -sv -tr -uk -zh_CN -zh_TW"
CFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -march=native"
CXXFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -march=native"

I'll try to file a bug, I'll post again in this thread if there are any updates.
Thanks.

I found that running LyX as root works. All the exceptions and errors I talked about in the previous posts are related to running it as normal user. The rest of the system works and programs work like a charm running them as normal user.
Does someone have a clue? I think this still qualifies as a bug, am I right?

I just fixed something similar to this. I was getting the same error after an update. In my case, I think it was caused by my re-emerging the QT libraries to put in the QT3 compatibility flag for an old program. Restarting the system and re-emerging lyx solved the issue.
