If I boot with kernel 4.16.6, start pulseaudio, then vlc, I get music. If I boot with kernel 4.16.7 and do the same it appears to play, but there is no sound. If I do a diff on the .config files, the only difference is one has 4.16.7 where the other has 4.16.6 in a comment. Any thoughts? Thanks,
Fred

It's probably a bug in that kernel release. 4.16 is still pretty new and bleeding-edge.

  1. Have you rebuilt your kernel modules?
  2. Have you tried to use any other programs? Surf to youtube and play a random video, for example.
  3. Does for example pavucontrol "see" vlc playing audio?
  4. Try to run vlc with alsa audio output. Does it work then?
  5. Do you see any errors appearing in dmesg (run dmesg -w to enter "follow" -mode) while playing audio?

Thanks for the response. I always rebuild the kernel modules when compiling a new kernel. I have not tried other programs and probably won't unless the problem stays unfixed. Pavucontrol shows vlc playing; just no sound. I'll look into your other suggestions if this problem is there with the next kernel release. Thanks.

I realize this might be sort of overkill in terms of clarifying the detail, but you said that rebuilding modules was done, so I assume that means you did emerge, for that. But what about installing the modules into the correct /lib/modules folders via make command like make modules-install or something like that. If you did all that, then it could possibly help to have a look at your kernel configuration, if not the entire thing then at least the portion relating to kernel audio devices and drivers.

IIRC in the past I run into a trap where the sound card was muted by a new kernel release. OTOH a
Code:
git log v4.16.6..v4.16.7 sound/
is full of changes...

I decided to wait for a new kernel (4.16.8), and now sound is working for my main user, although not for a second user. But that seems to be something sometimes works and sometimes does not.
