I'm having this unnerving problem with okular, when I search some words through the document. When it eventually finds them, all I can see is a black page with a white, large, rectangle. In order to see the page I must erase the searched word from the proper field. This is very unnerving while searching multiple instances through the pdf, and doesn't even highlight the word when doing so, it just finds the page!
HELP!
In an attempt to work around the issue, I erased the user settings for okular, and even downgraded to the minimum version in portage. To no avail.
versions tried: okular 4.7.4, 4.8.3, 4.8.4
I'm on gentoo with Xfce4 4.10 _________________ The free men's path is always obstructed by mediocrity. |

Maybe it depends on the properties of the pdf.
This does not happen to me with Okular 0.14.3 (I do not know what you mean with your versions) under kde 4.8.3 with an home made pdf. (I mean a text document passed through cups-pdf)
Pages are still visible and searched words correctly written over a yellow background. _________________

no, it does not depend on the pdf. Every pdf documents is affected.
Version 0.14.3 is mine too. I was misguided by the numeration in portage: check it, those are the version in portage (following -now I realize- the kde enumeration, given that okular is a package from kde-base):
Code: | ~ $ ls /usr/portage/kde-base/okular/
ChangeLog Manifest metadata.xml okular-4.7.4.ebuild okular-4.8.3.ebuild okular-4.8.4.ebuild |
There is more:
"find" in ps documents, either written by me with LateX, or from external source, is disabled;
"find" in pdf documents from books available online works badly as I said: white rectangle on black page;
"find" in pdf documents generated with LateX, simply does not work (as if they were scanned raw images saved in pdf).
Maybe some kde misbehaving? Where to check?
From portage point of view, everything is fine: no broken libraries, no unneeded packages, everything compiled from stable version. _________________ The free men's path is always obstructed by mediocrity. |

Which version of poppler do you use?
Which Graphics Card + Graphics driver (-version)?
Did you enable something like "invert colors" in the accessibility settings? ("black page" somehow sounds like you did).
Did you enable "transparency effects" in the okular settings?
Also a Screenshot would be nice to have. |

ok, assuming that's not a joke (I mean... a black page with a big white rectangle is just a black page with a white big rectangle, isn't it?),
here is the requested image:
http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/9168/screenshotokularissue.png
graphic card is nvidia G8200M (as it has been for years)
nvidia drivers are: 295.59, working fine for months
Other experiments:
1) I've tried different versions of poppler: same result. Current is: poppler-0.18.4-r1 & poppler-data-0.4.5-r1.
2) evince: works fine, no black page with white rectangle
3) both, evince and okular don't find any word in old pdf created with LateX 7 years ago (while commercial software on other OSes do). _________________ The free men's path is always obstructed by mediocrity. |

Your color scheme looks quite - overtuned
Could you try a default-one, like oxygen? Probably anopther style?
Looks like an issue with masking/highlighting. Probably also your windowmanager could cause this roblem.
Oh - which graphicssystem have you set?
$ eselect qtgraphicssystem show
Simply try with "native" if you have set something else. Check in a terminal if this was really set (so used by your applications):
$ echo $QT_GRAPHICSSYSTEM
raster (upstream default)/opengl (experimental) caused absolutely weird graphics issues here... |

following your suggestion, I've just tried both changes, and it's pretty the same. No improvements.
As for the graphics style: it's just Xfce-dusk (I've been using it for almost 8 years now )
I admit that dusk causes white chars in the google search bar (and no way to work-around this in a comfortable way - it should more likely be solved by google), for this reason it's the first thing I probed, ineffectively, though.
There must be some package, library, whatever, on which okular depends, causing this.
We can exclude:
1) okular settings (test:settings changed/directory erased)
2) okular version (test:4.7.4,4.8.3,4.84 - I'm following the kde enumeration)
3) poppler version (test:0.18.4-r1, 0.22.0)
Code: | equery g okular

About old pdf that cannot be searched through, I remember some message while updating, months ago, a new version of LateX and related, through emerge: the general meaning was: you may have to re-create (GASP!) your pdf/ps documents. Cannot be more precise.
Any hint will be appreciated. _________________ The free men's path is always obstructed by mediocrity. |
