After I fdisk, I run either
Code:
mke2fs /dev/hdc1
or
Code:
mkswap /dev/hdc2
or
Code:
mke2fs -j /dev/hdc3

They all hang. If I ps in another terminal, the process's Status is [D], and I can't kill -9 it. The drive works fine in Windows, and debian's mke2fs worked fine on it previously. Any ideas?

I had this same problem using any gentoo install cd. I believe it has something to do with which drivers are in the cd kernel for the IDE controller. When I used the Core Linux boot disk, I could use these disk functions without a problem.

It was on an old Compaq presario 4834. I had Redhat running on it fine, until I decided to switch to Gentoo.
