Hi all,

I'm not sure when this problem started, but I just noticed today that opengl isn't working any longer. I have tried running glxgears and get an error message. Typing in glxinfo|grep direct gets me the following:

Code:

Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0".
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0".
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0".
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0".
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0".
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig

Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0".
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0".
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0".
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0".
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0".
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0".

I am running an older nvidia card (GeForce FX5200) and have the nvidia 173.14.34 drivers installed. The relevant section of my xorg.conf file is:

Code:

Section "Module"
        Load  "extmod"
        Load  "dbe"
        Load  "record"
#       Load  "xtrap"
#       Load  "dri"
        Load  "glx"
        Load  "wfb"
#       Load  "freetype"
#       Load  "type1"
        Disable "dri"
        Disable "dri2"
EndSection

Finally, I have run eselect opengl set nvidia and did not receive any error messages. What is it that I'm doing wrong?

Best,

Alex

Take a look at your /var/log/Xorg.0.log ... there may be some hints as to why acceleration is not being setup.

What is the output of
Code:
# ls -ails /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions

And the one of
Code:
# ls -ails /usr/lib/opengl/nvidia/extensions

It seems to want to load dri and dri2 despite my wishes.

Also, I am getting the following errors:

Code:

I tried to reinstall the drivers and it did not do the trick.

I should add that I'm not as adroit at debugging this kind of problem. Interestingly, I don't think it's ever come up before.

Best,

Alex

OK, everything fine there.
Retry after removing the entire Module section from your xorg.conf
It should not be needed at all.

Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately, it still doesn't work. The same error and no change, so far as I can tell, in the xorg.0.log file.

I also tried wiping out nearly everything in the xorg file. Still no change.

Does it matter that my make.conf has the following?

VIDEO_CARDS="nv nvidia fbdev vesa"

Best,

Alex

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=181386

so:
- Upgrade to 64bits version of the driver (!)
- Downgrade xorg
- Wait for a 32bits update of the nvidia driver

Might help if you could push this one to a gentoo dev to ensure when an update nvidia driver (if any comes out!) it will be push fast.
At least, the gentoo dev might add a blocker for that nvidia version and xorg version to prevent other users get stuck

It's already out, 173.14.35, released one month ago! It's only changelog entry is:

Fixed a bug that caused libglx.so to fail to load on 32-bit X servers.

I upgraded to 173.14.35 (it's in portage but requires the ~x86 keyword). Things appear to be working now. Thanks!
