Hi everybody!

Is it possible to extract a file from an incoming tar ball?

I am in the middle of the last millennium and get a giant tar-ball via EDGE....

after 15 h downloading i can see a list of the already received files
Code:
tar -tvf incoming.tar

and see about 15 files...

i would like to extract one of them...
how can i do this?

copy the the file to a new location and fill up the rest with 000000000000.....???

is there another possibility?

kind regards

I think that tar just glues the files together, so if you copy the current file to your machine and extract, you should be able to get the current files out. Tar will probably give you an error saying it is incomplete, but it should still allow you to extract. I don't think you will need to add 0's to the file or anything like that.

Nothing really special to do:
Code:
cp /path/to/incoming.tar /new/path/.
cd /new/path
tar xvf incoming.tar

Before wasting your time (and our time too) - what's about a quick view in the manual ? *grumbl*
