Recently hit Portage. Anyone tried it? I'm asking because I don't want to waste my time like I did with Skype 2.2, which crashed whenever I deleted a voicemail (even after fixing the other bugs, e.g. the Logs directory). I'm still using Skype 2.1.
Thanks. _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

Same here BTW. 2.2 is quite crash prone Happy to have 2.1 left accidently on one of the machines to downgrade.
Given Windows Skype experience, further versions are more and more cumbersome, I wonder if 2.1 is the one to use even if latter come in. Simple and all relevant functionality is there. |

At some point Skype 2.1 will stop working for some reason or another.
Been searching for an open source VoIP platform that has all the functionality of Skype (DTFM, DID, voicemail, messaging, file transfer, video chat, etc.), but nothing hits the mark. _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

Stupid question : Is this version the one which will enable The insertion of advertising ?
Using 2.2.0.35 via Kopete here troublefree since I created the ~/.Skype/Logs directory.
Of course it is not opensource, however, net-voip/ekiga works also quite well and I make no doubt I will definitely prefer it as soon as skype displays its first advert. _________________

I'm pretty sure ekiga is open source. When I played around with it a few years back I found the NAT traversal suspect, and you have to find a decent SIP provider to get your DID. Moreover, it doesn't support SRTP (though, neither do most SIP providers). _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

You are correct. It's even GPL. _________________

Other problem besides even finding the alternative is to make your friends or sometimes random people to use compatible service.
Not to say, I often use Skype as a cheap phone service when on the road abroad.

OK so I tested 4.0.0.7
1/ Was previously running 2.2.0.35-r1. I had not upgraded to r99 because r99 requires EMUL_VER=20120520.
As app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-soundlibs-20120520 is not yet stable and as I do not want to run ~arch with emul-linux-x86*...
Curiously 4.0.0.7 is happy with EMUL_X86_VER=20120127 so... /me as well !
2/ Apparently 4.0.0.7 behaves well without the Log directory and stop crunching MB of logs is indeed another good thing.
3/ I did not investigate much but it seems I lost in options/video the possibility to tune the contrast / luminosity / gamma ... parameters of my video.
4/ About 3... anyway... I no longer see my own face in the communication window... so... I do not feel... personally concerned... _________________

Skype 4.0 working well for me so far; necessary things I had to do to get it work:
1) I had to upgrade emul-linux-x86-baselibs from 20120127 to 20120127-r1 to get libtiff.so.4
2) First login took a very long time -- migrating from old settings?
3) Had to manually set the mic boost in alsamixer for the mic to work (hardware: Conexant Intel HDA in Thinkpad X301, gentoo-sources-3.2.12)
Upgrade benefits noticed so far:
1) I like that I can see how much Skype credit I have
2) I like the (partial) visual consistency with the GTK theming
3) I do notice improved sound and video quality _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

Hello,
For 32 bits users : you need media-libs/tiff:3 to be able to run skype. This dependancy is not in the ebuild. I reported the bug. _________________ Kind regards,

Yes, see #1 in my post above -- thanks for reporting the bug.
One negative so far: the offline status icon and the invisible status icon are the same! This is annoying because those are my two most common states ...
Also, Skype 2.1.0.47 caused 10 wakeups per second in powertop, but this new one causes 30. However, my additional power draw on battery is roughly the same -- 0.2 to 0.3 watts when offline. Firefox is much worse, even when sitting on a static page ... _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

Only if you are using USE="qt-static" and you shouldn't be using it anyway...
It's a workaround flag, a bit like www-client/firefox-bin which you temporarily might install after installing Gentoo while waiting for the real version to build among the world.
I should really package.use.mask it away for security I guess. |

So to use Skype in the future we have to build the entire 32-bit Qt stack? Skype is the only Qt program I have on my machine, and I'm running 64-bit ... _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

Yep, it works with -qt-static use flag. my bug can be declared "invalid due to obsolete bad USE flag" _________________ Kind regards,

Ach, forgot about the emul-linux-x86-qtlibs package.
Set it up without qt-static USE flag, works fine.
Thanks ssuominen. _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

I am getting this error when starting Skype 4.0:
skype: error while loading shared libraries: libtiff.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Removing "qt-static" and re-emerging skype 4.0 fixed the problem.

It's so disappointing that Skype 4 still does not have 64 bit version . _________________ "Dear Enemy: may the Lord hate you and all your kind, may you be turned orange in hue, and may your head fall off at an awkward moment."

That would be nice. In this case, I would definitely use the static version so I don't have to build Qt. _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

I edited the ebuild to use EMUL_VER=20120127, works fine.
I think ssuominen updated the EMUL_VER because if people complain about bugs they only want to deal with the latest version -- no sense in supporting old 32-bit stuff. _________________ Personal overlay | Simple backup scheme |

USE="qt-static" requires the ~arch emul-linux-x86- for libtiff.so.4 file. USE="-qt-static" users can still use older emul-linux-x86-
but no sense in trying to separate the dependency between these since the ~arch emul-linux-x86- packages are about to go
stable anyways.
In other words, I recommend updating to latest emul-linux-x86- packages and be done with it |

so, the elephant in the room for me - tabbed conversations rather than one window per conversation
as in, skype-2.x every new message opens a new window
i got around this using skypetab-ng - which works flawlessly
I will assume skypetab-ng hasnt been updated for skype-4.x, so the million dollar question: is the new version tabbed, or, one-window-for-every-conversation?
Were things not working swimmingly for me with skypetab-ng id probably take the plunge and do the upgrade, but well, life so far is good, so my incentive to upgrade is minimal.
EDIT: i went ahead and did the "screw it", upgraded. Went off without a hitch. Aesthetically, I don't like it as well as I did skype-2 with skypetab-ng, but "it'll do". It seems pretty boneheaded that Recent Conversations is a completely separate window from the contacts list, so that you can minimize one but not the other - with skypetab-ng the two are tied together. Oh well, at least I have new icons. _________________ Lost configuring your system?
