I'm also getting these errors on both new systems and old systems trying to update.

We never mess with perl at all thus I'm somewhat annoyed by this.

Whomever owns the packages or maintains them should really look into why this issue is occurring for regular "out-of-box" users who aren't mucking with perl.

Requiring extra commands outside of the emerge update process is simply an anti-pattern. If so critical those commands should be automatically ran when updating the system.

So far all I've heard in this discussion is that perl is breaking itself somehow and there's a workaround but no one has investigated why.....

acidtonic ... if this was the case the @modules-rebuild, @x11-module-rebuild, revdep-rebuild, etc, etc, would also be "anti-pattern". Its always the case that perl-cleaner and python-updater are not automatically run on updating perl and python, and require manual intervention. There is nothing unusual about this and its not done by emerge becuase for every situation in which 8 people are saved the trouble of typing 'perl-cleaner --all' there are 2 others where this isn't necessary (ie, if doing --emptytree).

best ... khay

It sounds like you want Paludis' behaviour. Breaking your system is among some of the things it won't let you do.
