After the recent upgrade some things fail:
| Code: | Jun 08 07:27:41 [dbus] [system] Activating service name='org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1' (using servicehelper)
Jun 08 07:27:41 [dbus] [system] Activated service 'org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1' failed: Launch helper exited with unknown return code 1
Jun 08 07:27:41 [console-kit-daemon] WARNING: polkit_authority_get: Error getting authority: Error initializing authority: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Launch helper exited with unknown return code 1_
|
| Code: | Jun 08 07:29:03 [dbus] [system] Activating service name='org.freedesktop.Accounts' (using servicehelper)
Jun 08 07:29:03 [dbus] [system] Successfully activated service 'org.freedesktop.Accounts'
Jun 08 07:29:03 [dbus] [system] Activating service name='org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1' (using servicehelper)
Jun 08 07:29:03 [dbus] [system] Activated service 'org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1' failed: Launch helper exited with unknown return code 1
|
The result is that gdm doesn't start, it just switches to graphics console and there is only spinner with black background.
Is this connected to invalid file permissions? https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=420183

Confirming here. I think I might have seen dbus complaining about permissions.
Could this portage message:
| Quote: | WARN: prepare
Switching from group "wheel" to group "0" in /etc/polkit-1/rules.d/*.rules |
be relevant? Someone filing a bug report? _________________ https://plaintext.blog |

I'm getting different freedesktop messages along with 70+ continuous lines complaining about /etc/crypttab missing. I don't use any encrypted devices although sys-fs/cryptsetup is installed
I noticed this last evening - it hasn't affected the lxde desktop as it starts and everything seems functional.

EDIT:
I should clarify that I'm at sys-auth/polkit-0.105 - sys-auth/polkit-0.106 just failed with the error listed on bug 420227 No package 'mozjs185' found _________________ Good luck

It's a polkitd related problem.
/usr/lib/polkit-1/polkitd
| Code: | Error switcing to user polkitd: Error changing to home directory /dev/null: Not a directory
Exiting with code 1 |
I solve it with:
usermod -d /var/empty polkitd
After that polkitd starts normal. |

This is the same for me.
I have just spent the last 6 hours trying to figure out why my system was rendered useless.
I re-installed polkit and dbus etc and blew my system up by removing polkit.
I have masked polkit-0.106 and had to mask udisks-1.98.0 also.
Up and running again, but man, did that give me a fright. _________________ Whatever you do, do it properly! |

Rolled polkit and udisks back, which fixed my gdm start up. The only issue, which I have left is pressing ctrl alt f1 to a console and then back to the GUI. At that point I still have the same behavior as before. It hangs at the black screen with the rolling black ball or what ever that thing is. If I go back to the console and restart xdm everything is fine.
My monitor didn't go in standby just yet... hopefully the system will wake up from that at least. _________________ cya |

Do you mean I could use polkit-0.106 and as long as I "usermod" it will work? _________________ Whatever you do, do it properly! |

| If rolling back then beware of using media from untrusted sites. The old polkit has severe security holes. Every porn video made by a criminal knowing some weak ffmpeg entry points can alter your system. |

| Well, it was masked again for 'doesn't work', so... people will downgrade. |

Same issue for me, perhaps we simply miss a thing like polkit-gnome-0.106 that work with the new polkit

They forget to mask sys-fs/udisks-1.98.0 as well, it depends on it |

Hi,
Same problem here after polkit upgrade, doing as you say 'fixed' the problem for me for now, GDM start as normal again.
Alex.
Edit:
| Thistled wrote: | I think the best thing to do here is pull right back to the stable polkit. I am using polkit-0.104-r1 and GDM starts fine.
I see polkit-0.106 is hard masked now, which I presume is because of all the problems it has been causing users with GDM. [ |
Although the workaround worked I downgraded polkit to 0.105 (also udisk) as suggested, I ll wait for the new version in ~

I am somewhat confused at this statement. Do you mean the ~ version is full of security holes?
Does that also apply to the stable version? _________________ Whatever you do, do it properly! |

had the same problem here, downgrading udisk and polkit back fixed it.

probably the working X was not on VT7 anymore, but 8 or something... had the same problem while attempting to fix the polkit issue, and the working environnement was on ctr alt F8 |

After updating to >=polkit-0.106 did you run the command | Code: | | usermod -d /var/lib/polkit-1 polkitd |

Confirm that this works. I am running gnome-shell without problem. |

Are you capable of changing users, printers or anything that needs root-privileges by using the gnome-control-center ? Me not. It's asking for the "adm" password, that doesn't exist. _________________ https://plaintext.blog |

Everything else (sound, USB automount, ...) is working again. |

I'm having a similar issue on my KDE system since the update. The 'admin' password that it's looking for is the 'regular user' password that now resides in the 'admin' group. Not very secure IMHO. In KDE a polkit applet launches whenever escalated privileges are required (unless I manually evoke 'kdesu application'). Entering 'root' password has no effect. Only my 'regular user' password now works for routine administration like mounting drives, making changes to kdm, etc.
I think the devs need to rethink having the system opened-up like this. |

Now gvfs requires udisks-1.98.0 ...
but updating everything borked gdm again, had trouble to downgrade everything so that it returned back to normal!
The usermod command didn't do any change
Edit : actually, i was too quick to judge. I can have udisks-1.98 with gvfs requiring it and the system still working.
But the upgrade to higher polkit version seems to create problem
