I have a fairly fresh install of gentoo and I am trying to get sound working. Honestly I know very little about sound. I've had gentoo on this machine before and it always just worked. I kinda took it for granted.
I have been following the tutorial here,

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml

but this doesn't seem to work. I'm a little confused about whether pulseaudio, and jack audio need to be installed. Do I need either or both? My main use of sound is just for mp3's, and games.

I run in to this complication trying to install pulseaudio.

Code:
* Error: The above package list contains packages which cannot be
 * installed at the same time on the same system.

  (sys-fs/udev-204::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
    sys-fs/udev required by @selected

  (sys-apps/systemd-201::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by
    >=sys-apps/systemd-198-r5[kmod] required by (virtual/udev-197-r3::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)

I'm pretty sure I need udev, but if systemd is required, I'm not sure how I got it installed before.

I'll be honest, I'm not entirely certain what that means or how I proceed.

Does that mean I cannot install pulseaudio?

You most likely don't need jack.
As for systemd, it's hard to tell without seeing whole emerge output (perhaps even with '-t').

Strangely enough I fixed it. Well. Sort of. It actually just started working. Well, it least it works now.
