Does anyone else use nedit?

I just rebuild my machine on new hardware, and installed nedit as my favorite GUI editor. I use vim for most things, but nedit has some real advantages for some types of tasks.

Anyway, on the newly rebuild machine nedit builds fine but does not load. I get a huge dump of font load errors and then a segfault.

Then I went looking and it appears that xfs no longer exists.

Is nedit working for anyone?

Code:
No font found.

    Name: FONTLIST_DEFAULT_TAG_STRING
    Class: XmRendition
    Conversion failed.  Cannot load font.

Segmentation fault

This is the very end of a long dump.

installed how ? from source manually or from emerge ? check if you have /usr/lib/libXm
maybe you could refresh the font cache, I don't remember how it's done and if it exists on gentoo

I installed via emerge.

I copied a binary from my old install, and it launches but is missing all its menus.

I do have libXm:

Code:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root      14 May 14 07:41 /usr/lib64/libXm.so -> libXm.so.4.0.3
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root      14 May 14 07:41 /usr/lib64/libXm.so.4 -> libXm.so.4.0.3
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2932032 May 14 07:41 /usr/lib64/libXm.so.4.0.3

Edit:

OK, I found a newer ebuild of nedit, nedit-5.5_p20110116. It required a keyword unmask, but when it built it had the same behavior as the binary from my old system. No more explict font errors, but the menus are gone. Well, they're there, but are missing all text, so they're invisible. Message windows pop up, with buttons, but all text is missing.

Still looks like font issues.

OK, looks like I had a more general font issue. I tried a few other programs (e.g. vncviewer) and got a message,
Code:
Warning: Unable to load any usable ISO8859 font

I modified my xorg.conf to include all the font paths on my system, but that didn't help.

A bit of searching found this thread: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-739586.html

It really doesn't make any sense why rebuilding all the font packages with "nls" enabled would make any difference, but it did.

So I'm back in operation.

I should mention that there is a chance that the reason for nedit's misbehaviour may be due to it's sensitivity to the version of motif used, so for example if version x of motif was dynamically linked to nedit at compile time, but the version of motif/lesstif used on your system is not x, you are likely to have one problem or another. I'll tell one of my personal exriences with nedit: I had a problem, the clipboard was not working, and I couldn't figure out why as I always compiled it from source with the correct version of lesstif linked statically into nedit, turned out (after considerable amount of debugging) that one of Xorg's libraries was causing it, I had to modify Xorg's source code, recomile the "buggy" library (it's probably not really buggy, but rather incompatible to the system at it's current state) in order to get it going correctly, eventually I was successful.

im glad you fixed it at last.

I'm using NEdit on my system w/o problem : I did a standard emerge and I don't remember having to cheat or to modify anything.

Now, I more or less switching to Gvim as NEdit doesn't know about UTF8.
