Well before I went to bed last night I decided to emerge xfce 4.0
I will say right away it is definitely something to give a try if you are looking for a fast desktop environment on a slower Ultra (mine is an Ultra 5/270 w/320mb ram). KDE seems to be fine but it gets very sluggish as you are running several things.
XFCE seems to be lacking in a xterm replacement, but of course you can set it up so that your xterm isn't the awful black text on white back. Here is my favourite xterm command setup.
Code: | xterm -fg grey -bg black -sb -sl 4096 -fn 7x14 -fs 14 -ls |
Here's the site to XFCE http://www.xfce.org
It still could use some improvements, something I like seeing is the familiar (for us Solaris veterans) CDE like panel. It also has a movable dock, which I put mine at the bottom of the screen.
Anyone else had the chance to use this DE? Let me know what you think
Erik
