I'm trying to install Gentoo on a Sun Fire 280R. I downloaded the most current SPARC minimal install disc (4-23-2012), and it starts to boot up just fine until it gets to Starting Local [ok] where it hangs and I can't even break into OBP. So I downloaded an older minimal install disc (from 2007) and boot it to 2.6.17 and it boots fine into the livecd prompt, but when I get to the chroot part, it quits with a segmentation fault.
After the troubles I had with this, I decided to test to see if OpenBSD would work and it installed with no problems. I really want to have Linux on this server. Is there a way I can make it work?
CPU: 2x UltraSPARC III 750 MHz
MEM: 4 GB
OBP: 4.16.4 |

If it helps, I'm doing the install via 9600 baud console. |

I ran into the same problem attempting an install on a Blade 2000. Try using the April 23rd stage3, instead of the latest available. You can always upgrade from there. |

Will that stage3 work with the older install CD? |
