Well that was silly not hitting the shift key
Since when is everything starting with a capital letter and nesting capitals?
right from the wiki http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/NetworkManager
Code:
/etc/init.d/NetworkManager start

and now virtualbox is like this too?
Code:
VirtualBox

adding it to the default runlevel as the wiki suggests

Should the nm-* file settings in
/etc/dbus-1/system.d
be
Code:
sed s'/user="root"/group="plugdev"/' nm-*

wicd for example uses the group "users"

Code:
/etc/dbus-1/system.d
/etc/dbus-1/system.d/nm-avahi-autoipd.conf
/etc/dbus-1/system.d/nm-dhcp-client.conf
/etc/dbus-1/system.d/nm-dispatcher.conf
/etc/dbus-1/system.d/org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.conf

seem to be root only?
Now I just have to figure out why it networkmanager cant complete dhcp
almost done...

Edit for future reference:
Code:
echo ' nm-applet &' >> ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh
