Three questions:

1. /etc/conf.d/net or /etc/conf.d/network
2. /etc/rc.conf /etc/conf.d/rc
3. Automatic removal of obsolete configuration files?

wswartzendruber,

It mostly depends on the version of baselayout you have.

You cannot have automatic removal of obsolete config files - at aleast, not for baselayout updates as you need the old files until you have configured the new ones and rebooted. IF the reboot goes wrong, you will want to look at the old files again too.

wswartzendruber,

/etc/conf.d/net is normally used by both baselayout versions
/etc/conf.d/network comes with baselayout2 but you need not uses it unless you move to the new baselayout2 network setup. That is not the default behaviour in gentoo.

/etc/rc.conf and /etc/conf.d/rc are the same thing for the different baselayouts /etc/conf.d/rc belongs to baselayout1

I use there baselayout term loosely, baselayout2 also includes OpenRC

Is there a guide available for which ones I can delete?

wswartzendruber,

There is the Baselayout Migration Guide
You can remove all the files it tells you to.

Thanks for the clarification. But the file /etc/conf.d/network is not mentioned by the migration guide. Then I wonder that still both files are installed:
Code:
$ equery belongs /etc/conf.d/net*
 * Searching for /etc/conf.d/net,/etc/conf.d/network ...
sys-apps/openrc-0.9.8.4 (/etc/conf.d/network)
sys-apps/openrc-0.9.8.4 (/etc/conf.d/net)
I'm currently using the net file, while network has only comments.
Which one has precedence?
Does the network file also support network.{$softlevel} separations?
Does any manpage or doc describe the current baselayout/openrc? openrc itself only offers net.example.bz2.
