I'm not understanding how I transfer Gentoo from my boot usb stick on to an old Dell 360 desktop PC. Using unetbootin-windows-575 I created a bootable USB stick containing install-x86-minimal-20120306.iso. I am able to boot into Gentoo using the stick on the Dell. Using fdisk I am able to partition the Dell harddrive. I can then create filesystems on the Dell. I guess I am getting lost at the mounting process (chapt 4f and 5 of the handbook). Am I mounting the partitions on the USB stick or the Dell harddrive? OR both? Then with the stage 3 tarball, which system does that get downloaded to? At what point is the Dell bootable on it's own?

Welcome to Gentoo!
You're mounting the newly created partitions on the Dell hard drive. Nothing from the install CD (be it on a read CD-ROM or on a USB stick) makes it onto the completed Gentoo. The stage tarball and the Portage snapshot get downloaded to the newly created partitions on the hard drive. The system isn't bootable on its own until the end of Chapter 10, which is nearly at the end of the Handbook.
If you run into other things, don't hesitate to ask.
