I have emerged firefox and thunderbird and they seem to have wierd names aurora and lanikal

Whats this all about ???

check if you have compiled both with the 'bindist' USE-flag. If yes, remove it :)

Ok i did indeed compile with that use flag
whats that all about anyways ?

The bindist flag is for packages that will be used outside of your system. A great example of this is the Gentoo Live DVD, we do not have the right to brand it firefox/thunderbird as we are not providing what upstream has deemed safe in there opinion with all our patches and system libs.

Thanks for the great reply.
The useflag was put in my make.conf by default from the minimal cd.

The applications looked exactly the same just with different names.
