As root, when I echo -e "\a" at a console or in X, I get a beep.

As user, when I echo -e "\a" at a console, I get a beep, but not in X. That is, when in X as a user I cannot get the PC speaker/system bell to beep. Any ideas why this might be?

Out of curiosity, as the pro audio for Gentoo guy, what do you want the PC speaker beep in X for?

That is a more interesting question than I expected:

  • I want Firefox to beep, annoyingly, two hours after it was started. (Yes, that's the kind of guy I am.)

  • Because my described experience bemuses me, and I don't like it when my computer does that. Besides, I usually find that finding a solution to a problem usually has benefit beyond the immediate situation at hand.

You know, you could probably have a cron job monitor the firefox process and have ALSA emit any kind of tone you want at any given interval, repeated or not.

$ terminal --version
terminal 0.4.8 (Xfce 4.8)

With Terminal, the bell is an hidden option which is disabled by default.
See file:///usr/share/doc/terminal-0.4.8/C/advanced.html#hidden-options
Is it enabled in your profile ?

It wasn't, but it is now, which solves the problem as described[/u][/url].

For the record, file:///~/.config/Terminal/terminalrc doesn't exist by default. To create it go to Edit, Preferences, change something, and close the terminal. In the file can then be found MiscBell=.
