With the media/sound/amarok-2.7.1 I keep getting the semantic-desktop USE flag enabled on kdelibs, after checking the ebuild it looked like i needed to disable opengl on media-sound/amarok but that didn't help, any suggestions?
media-sound/amarok-2.7.1.ebuild:

Fair enough, guess I will just have to live with it then
Maybe they should do a news item for this _________________ Cheers

fair enough my @$#@$ why would I like that crappy hd grinder of indexing killing my hd, will the guys at kde/gentoo pay for new ones for me? I think I'm starting to feel like the users of gnome.
this flag was forced before but it was reverted, I hope it will happen again. _________________ Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity and I'm not sure about the former - Albert Einstein |

DaggyStyle, you can just disable it forever at runtime.
An HDD shouldn't die because of doing its job. I'm much more worried about virtuoso runaway processes grilling the internals of my laptop, but once again - disable it inside the nepomuk controller and be happy. |

indexer working => cpu in high load => lots of data is handled on the hd.
the hd has limited amount of reads/writes. afaik I cannot disabled everything, something will still be running.
also Gentoo is all about choice, well this migration counters that notion as it transforms Gentoo into any other bin distro out there but with greater need of patience.
is that case, what is the justification for gentoo to exist? _________________ Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity and I'm not sure about the former - Albert Einstein |

You can disable it completely.

Gentoo does not exist solely to disable semantic-desktop - the devs can only give choice where choice exists. If upstream does not care about -semantic-desktop it is not possible to maintain.
But really, the additional amount of read/writes on the HDD is the least of my concerns about nepomuk. |

is that case, what is the justification for gentoo to exist? |
Gentoo does not exist solely to disable semantic-desktop - the devs can only give choice where choice exists. If upstream does not care about -semantic-desktop it is not possible to maintain. |
from past experience with semantic-desktop, I doubt it.
in that case when will we see openrc phased out infavor of systemd? rh devs are doing a fine job in pushing it into all distros, how long it will take it to happen in gentoo? _________________ Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity and I'm not sure about the former - Albert Einstein |

While that in theory might happen at some point, that is way offtopic already. |

as of now, this issue caused my system to enter into a stuck situation, so how can one disable semantic desktop completely? _________________ Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity and I'm not sure about the former - Albert Einstein |

So, let's get constructive. I agree, you guys won't maintain KDE, if upstream doesn't care for -semantic-desktop our (gentoo users, including it's developers, who don't like semantic-desktop crap) choices are quite limited. What I can think of is:
- Create a fork of KDE. Unreasonable, just for the record.
- Stop using KDE. I think we had our reasons to start using KDE, so this is probably not an option as well.
- Start bugging KDE developers that we (the users) don't like what they are doing.
Option 3 seems the most promising, the only problem is how and where. Any ideas more specific that the general KDE forums/KDE dev lists etc.?
As for disabling semantic desktop, last time I've checked disabling it in system settings did remove some of it, but not all. This was about a year ago on Ubuntu, but I've found then a nice blog post describing some heavier system modifications for disabling it a bit more. I'll try to find it again, but soonest will be Monday, I probably have it in my day job.

But really, the additional amount of read/writes on the HDD is the least of my concerns about nepomuk.

Out of curiosity, what are others? Mine are mostly that it's something that eats a lot of CPU time, HD space and HD bandwidth, all of which are limited for absolutely no gain for me. |

4. Disable semantic-desktop at runtime
I think KDE upstream is well aware of the underwhelming reception of nepomuk, though there are people happily using it as well. Also, you would have to target all the specific application devs that have chosen to integrate nepomuk functionality (at some point that must have been deemed a good idea), there is no big centralised KDE mind steering everything towards nepomuk. The solution will be to improve it until it's fine for the majority. |
